who is a vulnerable adult?
With regard to adult protection, a vulnerable adult is defined as "a person who is, or may be unable, to take care of him or herself against significant harm or exploitation." The person might be disabled, frail or affected by a long-term illness. They could be any age from 18 upwards. Younger people are looked after by Child Protection legislation.
what is adult abuse?
Abuse against adults can be defined as "A single or repeated act or a lack of appropriate action...which causes harm or distress to another person." Abuse might be physical, sexual, psychological, discriminatory, financial, or any combination of these. Neglect is also a form of abuse.
what can I do if I believe someone is at risk?
If you are being abused, or are concerned about someone you know, please tell someone as soon as you can - you can contact your local authority or the Police. Reports of potential abuse are always taken seriously and will be investigated. However, please be aware that, despite your concerns, the adult you believe may be being abused has the right to decline help or intervention.
